‘National Girls Football Festival and Championship (U12 & U14)’
23rd to 31st December, Gelephu
The Bhutan MILO Cup 2019, National Girls Football Festival and Championship commenced yesterday in Gelephu, Sarpang district. 345 girls of ages between 12 to 14 years old from 17 Dzongkhags (Districts) are in Gelephu to take part in this festival and championship.
This event is considered one of the most important event of Bhutan Football Federation and Grassroots Football Department to be precise. This is because it is the best opportunity for us to select the best players from different parts of the country for our National Girls Football Academy in Gelephu through our Grassroots activities.
For this festival and championship, our district focal person selected the best players from their respective districts to form two teams of two different age groups, under 12 and under 14. The district focal person scouts these talents through different Grassroots activities such as weekly activities, monthly festivals, intra-district festivals and competitions, summer and winter coaching camps.
“Though it’s not so wise for us to select players by just observing them play few games here, I think it is great for the fact that our focal people have brought most of their best players from the districts here for us to see. I along with my selection committee are looking for girls with some key qualities such as speed, technique, temperament, athleticism and left-footed girls to groom them in our girl’s academy here in Gelephu for further development.”
– Vincent Subramaniam, Technical Director
The festival and championship will be played in league cum knockout fixture and finals will be played on 31st December for both age groups in Gelephu Girls Academy field, Shetikheri.
Kuendrup Higher Secondary School (Gelephu) is facilitating the players and official’s accommodation for this event.
