India registers yet another win in this tourney keeping their hopes alive to win the SAFF U 18 Championship as they defeated Maldives 2-1 today.
As usual Indian started the game as favorites to win three points but Maldives didn’t make it easy for them. Maldives took the lead on 25th minutes of the first half when forward Ahmed Tholal was gifted with easy goal of his life. Indian skipper Panwar failed to clear the ball.
It was a very spirited performance from Maldives against the superior Indian team. Maldives early exit from the tournament with zero win is one of the worst records for the country. Maldives suffered four defeats and could only score with team India.
“Boys are gradually improving and I am very much happy with the performance today,” said Head coach Abdul Ghanii Ihusan. He said that it was stepping stone for the boys and we will come back stronger in next tournaments.
After the goal down Indian came with full force attacking at Maldivian half until Rebello Princeton gave equalizer on 38th minutes of the first Half. And the second goal came quickly after the first goal on 41st minutes when Halder Abhisek brilliant individual skills gave India the much needed lead. It was thunderous striker from the holding midfielder scoring his first for the tournament.
“It was a good match today and a much deserving win,” said Head coach Pinto. He said that all they wanted was the three points to stay in this competition. “Maldives gave us good fight and now we have to focus on our next game which is very vital.
Second half was a very quiet game as both the side didn’t manage to score any goals. India came close to scoring many times and also Maldives had two clear scoring chances.
Maldives are officially out of the tournament while India will face Nepal in their last match.
