Grassroots football took birth in 2011 with the first FIFA Grassroots Coach Educator’s Course in Punakha. The Executive Committee (EXCO) members of Bhutan Football Federation appraised on the philosophy of Grassroots programs based on presentations by the Technical Director Mr. Choki Nima and Grassroots manager Mr. Ugyen Dorji on Development Plans (Short Term, Medium Term and Long Term Development Plan) during the 10th EXCO meeting in 2012.
The Grassroots plan was approved and endorsed by all the EXCO members and pledged to uphold Grassroots programs as a nation-wide priority. Grassroots football was set as a top priority with the philosophy to convey messages to all groups of people for a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing for the amateur or non-elite levels. It also provides platform for young children and develop football as a profession.
In 8 years, Grassroots football in Bhutan has been recognized for several times by the AFC whereby Bhutan Football Federation received 1 AFC President’s Recognition for Remarkable Effort to Develop Grassroots Football (2014), 2 AFC Aspiring Member Association of the year Awards (2016 & 2017) and Bronze Membership in the AFC Grassroots Charter in 2018.
